The McAllen City Commission handled a broad agenda at its July 13 meeting, including recognition tied to Texas Film Friendly certification, city infrastructure contracts, planning items and several downtown business matters.
The film-friendly designation was presented through the Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office of the Governor. City and business leaders said the certification gives production companies a clearer point of contact when considering McAllen for filming, with Visit McAllen expected to coordinate location, permit and logistics questions.
Commissioners also recognized July 2026 as National Parks and Recreation Month and July 17 as Parks and Recreation Professionals Day. McAllen Parks and Recreation leaders highlighted the city’s park system, pools, trails, community centers and sports facilities as public spaces that support recreation, health and neighborhood connection.
On planning matters, the commission approved several rezoning and conditional use permit requests, including items tied to commercial uses, vape and smoke shop permits and a nightclub request. A separate conditional use permit for Bar Alibi was approved for six months after city leaders noted prior enforcement concerns and said the business could return for renewal if it remains compliant.
A request involving MK’z Nightclub was sent back to the Planning and Zoning Commission after city staff said additional enforcement information had surfaced after the item was placed on the agenda.
The commission also approved several infrastructure and contract items, including engineering work for golf course improvements, inspection services and construction work connected to the FM 2220 Ware Road underpass trail project, and drainage improvements near 1st Street and Beaumont Avenue.
Other approvals included budget-related items, a lease agreement for a food court tenant at the downtown parking garage, a resolution tied to a HUD Section 108 loan guarantee application and board appointments. City officials also discussed future review of economic development agreements and nonprofit funding during upcoming budget conversations.
