SAN CARLOS, Texas — A $1 million road and drainage project is underway on Villarreal Avenue in the San Carlos area east of Edinburg, with work expected to improve stormwater flow and replace aging wastewater equipment serving about 30 homes.
The work covers Villarreal Avenue from State Highway 107 to Tex-Mex Road. Plans call for new pavement and drainage ditches on both sides of the street, according to project information reported by the Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1.
Crews have begun removing existing asphalt. The drainage work is intended to connect roadside conveyance to an outfall so stormwater can move away from the neighborhood more quickly during heavy rain.
The project also includes replacement of a lift station that officials said is more than 30 years old and has required recurring repairs. Work on the lift station is expected to begin next week.
The improvements are funded through a Texas Department of Agriculture grant. Construction activity may bring temporary access disruptions while crews work in the area; the project is projected for completion in July 2027.
