EDINBURG, Texas – South Texas Health System Edinburg is recognizing surgeon Dr. Bob Saggi after he completed his 2,000th robotic-assisted procedure at the hospital.
Saggi uses robotic technology for complex minimally invasive operations. The system gives a surgeon a magnified view and instruments capable of precise movement through small incisions. The surgeon, not the machine, controls each movement from a console.
For appropriate patients, robotic-assisted surgery may reduce incision size, blood loss and recovery time compared with some traditional open procedures. It is not the best approach for every patient, and the decision depends on the diagnosis, medical history and the surgeon's judgment.
Saggi is accredited as a Surgeon of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation. The designation evaluates experience, outcomes and the hospital resources supporting a surgical program.
Reaching 2,000 procedures reflects both the number of patients treated and the work of operating-room nurses, anesthesia professionals, technicians and other staff who support each case.
STHS Edinburg said the milestone is part of its continuing investment in advanced surgical care for South Texas. Patients considering surgery should discuss all available approaches, potential benefits, risks and expected recovery with their physician.
The milestone is a count of Saggi's robotic-assisted procedures; it is not a claim that robotic surgery guarantees a particular outcome.
