South Texas Health System is urging Rio Grande Valley residents to take heat safety seriously as extreme summer temperatures return to the region.
In a June 11, 2026, health system update, STHS said residents should recognize warning signs of heat-related illness and take early action before symptoms become severe. The system noted that older adults, children, outdoor workers and people with underlying health conditions face higher risk during periods of high heat and humidity.
The update cites 271 patients treated for heat-related illnesses across STHS emergency departments in 2025, with more than half of those cases occurring during June, July and August. STHS said 62 cases had already been reported through the end of May 2026.
The health system encouraged residents to seek cooling, hydration and medical attention when heat-related symptoms appear, especially as the Valley moves deeper into the summer season.
