REYNOSA, Mexico – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum opened a Tamaulipas tour in Reynosa by highlighting more than 38 billion pesos, approximately $2.16 billion, in planned housing investment across the state.
Sheinbaum attended a housing event at the Infonavit Puerta Grande development, where homes were delivered to families under the federal Housing for Well-Being initiative. Her Aug. 14-16 visit also included Matamoros, Villa de Casas, Ciudad Victoria, Tampico and Ciudad Madero.
Tamaulipas has been assigned a goal of 60,000 homes through Infonavit, Mexico's national housing fund for workers. Officials said about 47,000 homes have been contracted across 36 developments.
Another 5,270 homes were under review in nine proposed projects. Approval of those developments would bring the state's pipeline above 52,000 homes, or about 87% of the Infonavit target.
The program is intended to increase access to housing for working families while supporting construction activity. Delivery schedules will vary because contracted homes include projects at different stages of planning and construction.
Housing activity in Reynosa and Matamoros has implications for South Texas because the cities share labor, manufacturing and consumer markets with the Rio Grande Valley. Thousands of residents and commercial vehicles cross the border each day, and growth on either side can affect infrastructure and trade demand on the other.
The announced investment is statewide and should not be interpreted as $2.16 billion exclusively for Reynosa. The city was the first stop on a broader Tamaulipas housing tour.
