EDINBURG, Texas — A locally owned food hall representing more than $1.6 million in private investment is expected to open this fall as Edinburg works to bring more dining, retail and events downtown.
Las Almas Food Hall is under development at 225 E. Cano St., near the Hidalgo County Courthouse. The Garcia-Kalifa family is developing the project, which the Edinburg Economic Development Corp. said is expected to create more than 30 jobs.
Plans call for a collection of locally operated food vendors serving pizza, vegan dishes, tacos, burgers, barbecue, sushi, Asian fusion, ceviche and Mediterranean food. The project also is expected to include coffee, charcuterie to go and a full-service bar offering cocktails, beer and wine.
Beyond food service, Las Almas is planned as a community gathering place with retail vendors, live music, public events and a private event room. Organizers also plan to work with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to display student artwork for sale and host watch parties for Vaqueros athletic events.
Mayor Omar Ochoa said the city wants a downtown master plan to guide future spending on lighting, streets, drainage and beautification. The city sees the new Hidalgo County Courthouse, which opened in March 2025, and a planned parking garage as anchors that can draw additional private investment.
City leaders hope the courthouse’s regional traffic can support a broader artistic and cultural corridor. Las Almas is expected to open in fall 2026.
