DONNA, Texas – The city of Donna has received $2 million in federal community-project funding for improvements to the Donna Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.
U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, presented the funding to city leaders outside the complex. He said smaller communities often have difficulty generating enough local tax revenue for major park projects.
The planned work includes a covered basketball pavilion, playground, dog park, restrooms, outdoor workout stations and a market walk that can be used for community events and vendors. The final construction schedule will depend on design, procurement and federal requirements.
Gonzalez said the goal is to provide residents with recreation and green space close to home. Parks can also serve as gathering places and attract visitors for games, tournaments and public events.
The Donna project is one of 15 community projects Gonzalez said he secured funding for in the 34th Congressional District. His office reported approximately $12.6 million for district projects during the past year.
Other projects cited by the congressman include a veterans facility serving Harlingen and San Benito, drainage work in La Feria and emergency equipment for smaller communities.
Texas' 34th Congressional District includes portions of Hidalgo and Cameron counties and all of Willacy, Kenedy and Kleberg counties. The $2 million is designated for the Donna complex and is not a general grant for all city operations.
