McALLEN, Texas – Quinta Mazatlan will offer a Birding for Beginners workshop focused on identifying birds by sound at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15.
Isidro Montemayor Jr. will lead the session, which is designed to help participants recognize common calls and songs and understand how sound can be used when birds are hidden by leaves or difficult to see.
The urban sanctuary also will host an eBird workshop at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29. That program will introduce the digital platform birders use to record sightings and contribute observations to a global science database.
Each workshop costs $5 per person, and advance registration is required. Registration information is available at quintamazatlan.com.
Quinta Mazatlan’s Urban Forest Birding walks continue from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturdays and are included with regular admission. The guided walks give beginning and experienced birders an opportunity to observe species found in the Rio Grande Valley’s native thornscrub and urban habitat.
Participants should dress for warm weather, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Binoculars can help, but listening carefully is central to the Aug. 15 program.
