McALLEN, Texas — Love and resilience took center stage at South Texas Health System Heart when Adriana Pomares, 34, and Gabriel Garcia, 40, exchanged vows in the hospital’s second-floor lobby on Friday, July 31.
Nearly 50 family members, caregivers and well-wishers attended the ceremony, which hospital staff organized after an unexpected health crisis forced the couple to postpone their original wedding plans.
Pomares had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks. On July 20, Garcia took her to the Level I Trauma Center at STHS McAllen after her shortness of breath and rapid heart rate worsened. Physicians found fluid around her heart and lungs and transferred her to STHS Heart for specialized care.
She was diagnosed with pleural effusion, an abnormal buildup of fluid between the membranes surrounding the lungs and the chest cavity. After a procedure to remove fluid from around her heart, additional testing and treatment remained necessary, making the couple’s planned July 25 wedding impossible.
As Pomares’ condition improved, the couple asked hospital leaders whether they could marry at STHS Heart. Caregivers worked with the family and transformed the lobby into a wedding venue within hours.
Juvel Fernandez of Lake James Kingdom Hall in Edinburg officiated. After exchanging vows, the couple shared their first kiss and first dance as hospital staff, relatives and friends applauded.
Pomares said seeing nurses, physicians and hospital staff celebrating alongside her family made the occasion especially meaningful. Garcia said the work completed on short notice created a day they would never forget.
The ceremony turned a frightening medical ordeal into a celebration of commitment, faith and compassionate care.
