South Texas Health System’s Graduate Medical Education Consortium has welcomed 65 new medical residents, expanding the pipeline of physicians training in the Rio Grande Valley.
The incoming physicians began their residency education July 1 at South Texas Health System acute care hospitals. They will train across family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, transitional year and general surgery programs.
The class includes 10 first-year family medicine residents, 20 first-year internal medicine residents, 10 first-year emergency medicine residents, 13 transitional year residents and 12 general surgery residents across first- and second-year training.
Residents will rotate through STHS McAllen, STHS Edinburg, STHS Children’s and STHS Heart. The training gives physicians direct clinical experience while also helping hospitals serve the region’s healthcare needs.
The consortium has grown quickly in recent years. What began with two residency programs now includes five, with the addition of general surgery marking another step in the system’s effort to build a stronger local physician workforce.
Graduate medical education can have long-term effects on healthcare access. Physicians who train in a region are often more likely to understand its patient population, community health needs and local care networks. Health leaders hope some of the incoming residents will remain in South Texas after completing their training.
The residents will also participate in research, faculty mentorship and community health initiatives. Partnerships with Texas A&M University, ASAS Health and Nuestra Clinica del Valle are part of the consortium’s training model.
For the Rio Grande Valley, the new class represents both immediate support inside local hospitals and a longer-term investment in the physicians who may care for Valley families in the years ahead.
