The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area has moved near the top of a national ranking for young homebuyer access, according to a 2026 ConsumerAffairs analysis cited in a recent local report.
The Hidalgo County metro ranked No. 2 among 100 large U.S. metro areas in the analysis, jumping 23 spots from the previous year. The study considered homeownership rates for residents under 35 and the share of home purchase loans going to younger buyers.
According to the analysis, the region had the highest share of home purchase loans issued to buyers under 35, at 46.3 percent. It also posted one of the strongest under-35 homeownership rates in the country, trailing only Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The report pointed to affordability as a major factor. The Hidalgo County metro median home sale price was listed as the lowest among the 100 metros reviewed, giving first-time buyers and younger households a more realistic path to ownership than in many larger markets.
Local economic leaders said the ranking supports a broader quality-of-life case for McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley, where relatively lower housing costs, job growth and business recruitment efforts continue to shape the region appeal to young families and workers.
The ranking comes as younger buyers nationwide continue to face pressure from higher mortgage rates and rising home prices. In that environment, the Valley affordability remains a competitive advantage for residents looking to build long-term roots.
