EDINBURG, Texas – Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley has opened a renovated pediatric intensive care unit as the hospital expands critical-care capacity for children across South Texas.
The approximately $9 million project adds 15 pediatric intensive care beds and updated clinical equipment. Hospital leaders said the expansion is intended to reduce the need for families to travel outside the Rio Grande Valley when a child requires a higher level of care.
The hospital also hired about 30 employees to support the additional beds and services. Pediatric intensive care units treat critically ill or injured children who need continuous monitoring, specialized nursing and advanced respiratory or other medical support.
Eric Hamon, president and CEO of Driscoll Health System, said the investment responds to growing demand and is part of the system’s continued work to build both clinical services and hospital infrastructure in the region.
The Edinburg children’s hospital opened to bring pediatric specialty and inpatient care closer to Valley families. The expanded unit increases the number of children the hospital can treat at one time and gives clinical teams more space and equipment for complex cases.
Hospital officials said the new rooms were designed around pediatric care and family needs. The expansion also strengthens the local network for emergency departments and community hospitals that transfer young patients requiring intensive care.
The project comes as population growth in Hidalgo County and across the Rio Grande Valley continues to increase demand for pediatric specialists, hospital beds and other advanced medical services.
