South Texas College Assistant Professor of History Victor Gomez is marking two decades at his alma mater, where his work has extended from the classroom to one of the region most visible collegiate cultural programs.
Gomez, an STC alumnus, founded Ballet Folklorico South Texas College after seeing students who had danced in high school programs but lacked nearby opportunities to continue performing after graduation. What began as an effort to fill that gap has grown into a signature cultural program representing the college and the Rio Grande Valley.
The program has connected students and community members with Mexican folkloric dance while also creating leadership, travel and performance opportunities. Participants have represented STC at events across Texas, elsewhere in the United States and internationally.
Gomez own path through STC shaped the way he works with students. After beginning as a nursing major and later shifting toward education and history, he returned to the college as an instructor and has used his experience to encourage students who may still be finding their direction.
Beyond dance, Gomez helped expand cultural programming through conferences, lectures, book talks and community events. He also previously coordinated the college Center for Mexican American Studies.
STC has recognized Gomez with several honors during his career, including faculty and excellence awards. He said the classroom remains central to his work and that his long-term goal is to keep helping students see themselves as future professionals and leaders.
